"Seam carving for content-aware image resizing", by Ariel Shamir and Shai Avidan, is like "smart" cropping and it's virtually invisible. Objects in an image can be magically removed (sans stamp tool), mountains and oceans can be lengthened (without stretching), even paintings can be redesigned to suit your sizing needs. All because the computer automatically takes into account what's important in the image and what isn't.
